Pension advice FAQs we can answer

How much do I need to retire?
Financial planning using cash flow modelling can assist with determining how much you will need in retirement each year, together with your targeted pot size at retirement.
Are my pensions on track to reach my income goals?
A financial planner can review your various pension plans and their growth potential in light of your risk profile to determine whether they are on track to meet your needs.
What are my options when I retire?
Depending on your risk profile, you could draw an income / lump sum from your pension flexibly each year or purchase a guaranteed income for the rest of your life. Each has its own merits and it’s important to discuss these options in depth with a pension expert.
Do my pensions match my risk appetite?
Have you ever spoken to a pension expert about your risk profile, or whether the investments you hold align with the level of risk you are taking? Failure to match accurately could have significant implications for your retirement goals.
How much tax free cash can I take?
Typically 25% of your pot. However, older pension contracts might have generous benefits, allowing you to withdraw more, tax free. It’s important to arrange a review of your pension plans with an expert to ensure you do not lose any benefits.
What happens to my pensions when I die?
Pension plans which have not been drawn down could pass to your financial dependents / other beneficiaries. It’s important to review and update your Expression of Wish form linked to your pension to ensure your pension will transfer in line with your wishes.
How does tax relief work?

Essentially, subject to certain allowances, some of the money you would have paid in tax on your earnings goes into your pension pot rather than to HMRC. Depending on how you contribute to your pension, you could obtain tax relief at your highest marginal income tax rate.

This is on the basis that any tax relief over the basic rate is claimed via your annual tax return.

How much should I be saving for retirement?
Ideally you should treat saving for retirement like a marathon. Start as early as possible with as much as you can reasonably afford. Life is expensive these days so it’s about finding a balance between living and saving. As you progress through life and your career, try to have discipline in saving more. We can calculate your aspirational income and the pot size you would need. This will help you understand if you are on track, or how much extra you would need to be saving.
What happens if I exceed the lifetime allowance?
If you exceed the lifetime allowance there are potential tax implications. The tax applicable varies depending upon the age you draw the funds, the method you choose (income or lump sum) and your marginal rate of tax. We can assist with understanding the rules and devising a plan if applicable.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

The levels an bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.
